Fam trip boat accident kills one
A boating accident has killed one person and injured several more during a travel industry fam trip in western New York.
It happened during an underground cavern boat tour in Lockport.
The boat capsized throwing all 29 people on board into the water.
One man was trapped beneath the overturned hull and died, Lockport Fire Chief Luca Quagliano said.
Eleven more were taken to hospital with minor injuries.
The fam trip was for hospitality workers from the Niagara area organized Destination Niagara USA.
Rescue workers had to breach a cavern wall to reach all the people.
The narrow cavern tunnel was originally used in the 19th century to send water from the Erie Canal to the town of Lockport.
Lockport Mayor Michelle Roman said the attraction will remain closed while an investigation is completed.
Roman said it is the first accident since the attraction opened in the 1970s.
Operated by Lockport Cave Tours, it is located about 20 miles from Niagara Falls.
