Families prefer sun to snow at Christmas – online poll

Friday, 19 Dec, 2006 0

Almost half of parents would rather spend Christmas Day lying on a beach than sitting on the sofa, according to a new poll.

The survey of 270 families by travel website www.takethefamily.com found that 48% want to escape the British winter for festive sun.

But the traditional British Christmas – eating, drinking and watching classic films – proved more popular than a family ski trip.

A third (33%) of parents said they would rather stay at home with the mother-in-law than take to the slopes. Only 19% said they preferred Christmas on the slopes.

The website’s managing director Lucy Ace said: “More and more travel companies are tailoring Christmas winter sun packages towards families – with interconnecting rooms plus loads of well-organised fun for the kids. And Father Christmas always visits little ones wherever they are – even in the Caribbean.

“Skiing with kids is a booming market but families seem to prefer to leave their ski trips to the New Year and particularly February half term.

“A lot of parents with young children obviously still like a traditional Christmas at home with all the trimmings. Or heading to a cosy British hotel and letting them take the strain of preparing all the food and drink.”
