Fatal Attraction star offered tourism role

Movie star Michael Douglas has been offered a new role – as tourism ambassador for Bermuda.

The Hollywood actor is part-owner of the Ariel Sands hotel project, which broke ground this week, and is keen to promote Bermuda to a global audience.

Bermuda Tourism Authority chairman Bill Hanbury has held discussions with the actor about fronting a tourism marketing campaign.

“Michael is interested in helping us not only to promote the BTA but also to promote Bermuda to a global audience. He has terrific reach, particularly in the social media world, and we want to take him up on that offer,” Hanley said.

“The announcement of the redevelopment is very important and we believe that a new product like that, with two terrific Bermuda supporters like Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones, are of high value in the marketplace and we are going to fully take advantage of that.

“He certainly is interested in this development — it made economic sense to them. It is a very strong concept that works really well with Bermuda as a product, so we are fired up about it.”

Ariel Sands has been in the Douglas family for 60 years, and the $85 million project is being developed by New York-based Olympic Property Partners.
