A major rail accident in the UK has left one person dead and nearly 90 others injured after two passenger trains operated by East Midlands Railway collided near Bedford, north of London.
The crash occurred at approximately 5:15 p.m. on June 19, prompting British Transport Police to declare a major incident. The trains involved were East Midlands Railway services traveling southbound to London St Pancras—one operating from Corby and the other from Nottingham.
Emergency responders, including more than 20 ambulances, specialist rescue teams, and six air ambulances, were dispatched to the scene near Elstow in Bedfordshire. According to the East of England Ambulance Service, one person died at the scene. Eleven passengers suffered very serious injuries, 22 sustained serious injuries, and a further 56 people were treated for minor injuries.
The deceased has since been identified by the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers as one of the train drivers involved in the collision.
Passengers described a chaotic scene following the impact. Several travelers reported being thrown forward by the force of the crash, while others said they witnessed injured passengers and damaged train carriages.
Rail services on one of the UK’s busiest north-south corridors were severely disrupted, with lines between Luton and Bedford closed and operators advising passengers not to travel. Replacement buses were deployed to assist stranded travelers.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander expressed condolences to the victim’s family and praised the emergency response.
The cause of the collision remains unknown. Investigators from the Rail Accident Investigation Branch are on site and have launched a full investigation. Authorities emphasized that it is too early to speculate on the cause, although officials noted that serious rail accidents remain rare on the UK network, which is widely regarded as one of the safest in the world.
According to East Midlands Railway Ltd and Thameslink companies, they will be no trains between Bedford and London St Pancras International / London Bridge / Sutton on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 June. This will affect all travelers taking also the train to Luton airport.
