Fatalities mount following second earthquake in Nepal
At least 82 people are known to have died and at least 2000 people were hurt when a second major earthquake struck Nepal yesterday.
A least 17 of the fatalities were in India, said the BBC.
Rescue work has begun to find victims and survivors of the Tuesday’s magnitude 7.3 quake, which came just three weeks after an earthquake that killed more than 8,000.
A search continues for a missing US aid helicopter, which had eight people on board.
Tuesday’s earthquake hit near the town of Namche Bazar, close to Mount Everest, at lunchtime. It was about two miles deeper than the quake on April 25.
Shallower earthquakes tend to cause more damage at the surface.
The latest tremor was felt as far away as Delhi, the Indian capital, and Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh.
In Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu, which is around 40 miles from the epicenter, people ran from buildings into the street and thousands spent last night in the open. Many of them have not returned to their homes since the devastating earthquake last month.
