FCO condemns Argentine decision to ban cruise ships

The Foreign and Commonwealth office has condemned a decision by Argentina to refuse two cruise ships access to its port.

P&O’s Adonia cruise ship has been refused access after being scheduled to visit the port of Ushuaia in Argentina.  It was on a South America Adventure tour which left Southampton on 13 January.

Star Princess, operated by Princess Cruises has also been refused entry into the same port following a similar docking at Port Stanley in the Falkland Islands.

A spokesman for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said: "We are very concerned to hear the Adonia and Star Princess have been refused access to the port of Ushuaia.

"There can be no justification for interference in free and legitimate commerce.

"British diplomats in Argentina are urgently seeking to clarify the circumstances surrounding this incident, and we are in contact with the company concerned."

A national holiday in Argentina has delayed any further information.

A P&O Cruises spokesman said: "Following its call at the Falkland Islands on Saturday February 25, the local port authorities have not permitted Adonia to berth at Ushuaia, Argentina; today.

"The cost of all shore excursions will be refunded. Adonia is now sailing towards the next port of call, Punta Arenas; Chile."
