Fiji’s Prime Minister says no threat of military coup

Fiji’s Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase has urged the nation not to be alarmed over a threat made by Fiji’s military commander Commodore Frank Bainimarama on Tuesday when he gave the Prime Minister an ultimatum to drop plans for an amnesty deal for those involved in a 2000 coup or be forced out of office.

After a series of emergency meetings with military and police representatives Mr Qarase urged all citizens to remain calm and carry on with their daily lives in the normal way, adding that both the military and the police advised that there was no cause for alarm, no threat to order and security and that the Government, through the Ministry of Home Affairs, will continue to closely co-ordinate the security forces in monitoring the situation.

Commodore Bainimarama’s demands and threats have caused security concerns before next week’s annual summit of Pacific leaders in Nadi with John Howard’s attendance confirmed, but New Zealand leader Helen Clark considering pulling out.

A spokesman for Mr Howard said that although the Government was monitoring the situation in Fiji, the Prime Minister would be attending the meeting.
