Finance members agree voluntary levy
European finance ministers have agreed in principle for a voluntary levy on air tickets to fund aid in developing countries.
No details have yet been made on how much the levy would be or how the money would be raised. However, these points are due to be decided at a European Commission meeting on June 7.
Jean-Claude Juncker, the Luxembourg prime minister who chaired the talks among 25 EU finance ministers, said: “This will be a voluntary contribution which some member states propose to turn into a mandatory contribution, but we are leaving this open.”
