Finnair joins commission axe bandwagon
Finnair has slashed US travel agent commissions to 5% with no cap on the amount which can be earned.
But airline officials denied it plans to join major European airlines such as Lufthansa and Air France in moving to zero pay for US agents in the near future.
“As far as I know, nothing concrete is planned or discussed beyond what we have done now,” said Keijo Suila, president and chief executive officer of Finnair.
“I sincerely don’t expect anything further will happen to commissions, but competitiveness really is what we have to stress always.”
The commission cut follows US government approval of antitrust immunity for Finnair and its Oneworld alliance partner American Airlines to further co-ordinate their schedules and pricing.
“We will also explore co-operation with American beyond current levels,” said Suila.
Meanwhile, Finnair has reduced its daily service from New York Kennedy airport to Helsinki to six flights a week until May.
