Fire hydrants for dogs just the beginning

”Gone to the dogs” has taken on new meaning at the Trade Winds Island Grand Resort.

The resort on St. Pete Beach not only is offering deals for pets but they also come with donations to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).

The two-night Fido Fabulous Adventure package starts at $387 and includes accommodations in a pet-friendly suite, use of the Pet Play Zone and Doggie Accessory Center, and a Bow Wow Now pet amenity stuffed with toys and treats.

The package also includes the daily Resort Amenity Fee, which includes a hooded beach cabana with cushions for two, water trykes and paddleboats, tennis court play, fitness center and classes, day play on the mini-golf course and ScheldePro beach volleyball courts, self-parking, wireless Internet access, portions of the children’s program, daily newspaper, pool towels and more.

During November, the TradeWinds will celebrate National Animal Shelter Week (Nov. 2-8) the entire month by donating a large bag of dog or cat food to the (SPCA) for each Fido’s Fabulous Adventure package that is booked that month.

A spokesperson for the hotel says the move is a response to the growing number of requests by visitors traveling with their pets.

Other hotels nationwide have been jumping on the dog bandwagon but perhaps none to the extent of this one.

The TradeWinds Island Grand designated 48 pet-friendly suites last year. The resort also added a new doggie play area, and other amenities just for pets. The Pet Play Zone features doggie drinking fountains, umbrellas for shade, benches, doggie rinse and drying station with towels, owner sitting area, and even fire hydrants.

A special dog walk area has also been identified, set along the property’s meandering waterways and beachfront dunes, and even skirts by a hammock for some snooze time for the guest and his/her pooch.

A Doggie Accessory Center stocked with dishes, leashes, toys and towels, for use during the furry friend’s stay, is accessible for guests using their room key. Guests wanting to treat their pet to some extra-special service can order from the pet-only room service menu, including Mutt Meatloaf, Fido Fajitas and Kitty Kasserolle to name a few.
