Fires rage on in Greece, but Greek agents say it’s business as usual for tourists
HATTA, the Greek travel agents’ association, has sent an assurance to UK agents about the impact of the forest fires that continue to sweep the country.
Through ABTA, HATTA is telling agents that “all national roads are fully accessible, all archeological sites and museums are open to visitors, and hotels and resorts are not affected and are operating as usual”.
On behalf of members, ABTA chief executive Mark Tanzer sent his fullest sympathies to all those affected.
At least 63 people were killed in the blazes over the weekend.
Arsonists are believed to have been responsible and some arrests have already been made.
Since Friday, fires have swept the country, mainly in the Peloponnese (the southern part of mainland Greece), Attica (the area around Athens) and the island of Evvia (to the north of Athens).
Many have now been brought under control, but due to windy conditions the fires remain unpredictable and risk flaring up again.
