Police safely detonated an unattended backpack after a bomb scare in the tourist town of Ubud, Bali.

A backpack containing a ‘low explosive device’ was planted in front of a food stall and the bag was marked with the word ‘bomb’.

It contained fireworks, a pipe and nails, according to news reports.

"The backpack was filled with fireworks, low-explosive materials. We managed to detonate it before it exploded. We’re still pursuing the person who left the backpack there," Gianyar regency police chief Waluya said.

An unsuspecting tourist was caught up in the drama as his passport was found inside the bag.

Dutch national Mark Aart was questioned but later released without charge.

"Aart was only questioned as he was the bag’s owner. He had earlier reported that he lost the same bag," said Ubud police chief I Nyoman Wirajaya.

In 2002 more than 200 people were killed in bombings in the beach resort of Kuta.
