First American death announced from coronavirus
The first American citizen has died of coronavirus in China.
The 60-year died in Wuhan on February 6, according to officials at the American Embassy in Beijing.
The news was announced as planeloads of evacuees arrived in the US from the Chinese city which has been the epicenter of the outbreak.
There was also an unconfirmed report a Japanese national died in Wuhan from coronavirus.
The United States said it will send $100 million to help China fight the spread.
China has so far spent $4.5 billion to combat the virus.
Even though the number of international cases has surged to over 300 outside China, only two deaths have been reported.
There was one in the Philippines and another in Hong Kong.
The total death toll of more than 800 has surpassed the SARS epidemic in 2003.
However scientists believe the outbreak may reach its peak in the coming weeks and may by then have infected up to 5% of the population of Wuhan.
"Assuming current trends continue we’re still projecting a mid-to-late-February peak" Adam Kucharski, an associate professor of infectious disease epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine told Bloomberg.
