Flight delays about to get worse
Flight delays? Passengers this summer can expect one of the worst times ever, according to various predictions.
“Flights that were canceled in the past won’t be canceled. They will be delayed instead for however long it takes to fix the plane,” said Terry Trippler, who operates an airline consumer site.
US airlines have cut domestic flights by 2.3% from last summer’s level, according to the Air Transport Association. The US airline fleet size has shrunk as much as 21% since six years ago, as a result of cutbacks at bankrupt airlines such as United.
“For passengers, the summer could turn out to be one of the worst periods for flight delays,” said Washingtonpost.com.
Two months ago, 78% of the nation’s flights made it to their destinations within 15 minutes of scheduled arrival time. That was down from 83.4% last year, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics.
In April, there was the highest number of delayed flights since statistics started being compiled 11 years ago.
The major reason for delayed flights remains summer thunderstorms.
