Flights cancelled as Hong Kong braced for tropical cyclone
Almost 400 flights have been delayed and at least 22 cancelled as Hong Kong braced itself for tropical cyclone Wipha.
Further disruption to flights is expected to linger into Thursday.
Tram services in Hong Kong were also suspended on Wednesday.
"The airport has activated the Airport Emergency Centre to coordinate operations of the airport. Passengers are advised to stay alert of announcements by airlines and confirm their seats before heading to the airport," a HKIA spokesperson said.
Travellers can also check updates on the airport’s website and mobile app.
The Hong Kong Observatory issued a No 8 storm advisory, which rates wind speeds of up to 117kmh, and gusts that could top 180kmh.
The strong winds were whipping up strong seas and rain, and there was still a fear of flooding and possible landslides.
The Home Affairs Department opened 23 temporary shelters across the special administrative region.
There were reports of fallen trees and a handful of people sought medical treatment for injuries sustained.
Schools shut early and government offices and the financial markets closed.
Meteorologists say the storm could also impact the gambling mecca of Macau.
