Florida tourism leaders join forces to increase fly-cruise business
Two of Florida’s major transportation hubs are joining forces in a strategic alliance to boost tourism prospects in the region.
Port Canaveral and Orlando International Airport are to work together to seek more international air routes, cruise ship traffic and cargo business for Central Florida.
Central to this alliance is a proposal for a high-speed rail link between the cruise port and airport which is key to attracting more cruise passengers, according to Port Canaveral Chief Executive Officer John Walsh, who chaired a joint meeting.
The meeting also included representatives from Disney Cruise Line, the Kennedy Space Center, Legoland and SeaWorld Orlando.
Both the Port Authority and Greater Orlando Aviation Authority will work towards expanding air services into Orlando and grow air and sea cargo operations.
Walsh said he expects a 25% increase in cruise passengers through Port Canaveral by 2015, rising to 50% in 2017.
He added that every new cruise ship based at Port Canaveral is worth up to $250 million a year to the local economy.
