Flurry of ski expansions

Monday, 29 Dec, 2009 0

Hotel expansions are the theme at some of North America’s most popular ski resorts.

“Despite the recession, ski resorts Mammoth Mountain and Jackson Hole are breaking attendance records with the help of new direct airline routes. In Whistler, British Columbia, Blackcomb had its snowiest November ever,” reports Thestreet.com.

Whistler is punctuating a crescendo of development that includes expansion of the Canadian province’s Sea-to-Sky Highway. The only new hotel to open there this year is the Aava Whistler Hotel, a boutique hotel reminiscent of the Alpine-style condos that surrounded Whistler Village.

Located along the main thoroughfare of Whistler Way, the hotel is a short walk from the Whistler Village Gondola. The hotel’s rooms are cozy and white, and start at US$155.

CheapOair is offering special travel deals to AAVA Whistler Hotel starting at $205. The company is also offering cheap flights to Whistler, starting at $246.

Stowe Mountain Resort in Vermont has been a busy scene of construction and expansion since opening in 2008. Some rooms start at 2,000 square feet, making them suitable for large families.

Next year, what is known as Utah’s glitziest ski town will get an added shot of luxury in Park City, where the Waldorf Astoria will open its first hotel geared to skiers with the Dakota Mountain Lodge at the base of The Canyons ski resort. Entry-level rooms are outfitted with gas fireplaces and marble bathrooms while condo-style suites come with stainless-steel kitchens and washing machines.
