Flybe sees 32% August growth

Flybe claims record summer passengers carryings “fly in the face of doom and gloom reports” about the future of low cost flights.

The airline saw August passenger numbers rise by 31.8% on this time last year, with carryings of almost 420,000 passengers.

Flybe claims to have matched the increase in passenger numbers with yield growth, up 10% in the first five months of the year.

Sales and marketing director Mike Rutter said: “These figures really fly in the face of all the doom and gloom reports on the future of low cost travel and vindicate our aggressive investment and expansion policy over the past 12 months.

“They prove that if you listen to your customer base – both existing and potential – and give them the routes they need, combined with attractive prices and add on services, there will always be a demand and that demand can be grown.

“By offering an increasing number of business orientated domestic routes at competitive rates, we’ve attracted more late booking business passengers from high cost airlines and this has really fuelled growth for us over the last few months.”

Flybe runs a network of 25 international and 17 domestic routes. Of 14 new routes, including Exeter to Glasgow and Edinburgh, Southampton to Perpignan and La Rochelle and Bristol-Bordeaux, 10 are out-performing budget, according to the airline.

The figures came in the wake of bmi announcing record carryings, as reported by TravelMole.
