Foreign Office warns of protests in Maldives
Holidaymakers heading for the Maldives are being warned by the Foreign Office to take care following a large street protest in the capital Male at the weekend.
It said that protests and demonstrations in the Maldives are not uncommon, especially in Male.
"Previous demonstrations have let to violence and arrests," it said. "Take care, remain vigilant, take appropriate security precautions and avoid large gatherings, protests and rallies."
The latest protest follows the arrest of former President Nasheed, now leader of the opposition party, under anti-terrorism laws.
The Foreign Office pointed out to holidaymakers that there is no British Embassy or Consulate in the Maldives. Those who need consular assistance are advised to contact the British High Commission in Sri Lanka.
"An honorary consul in the capital, Malé, can liaise with the British High Commission in Sri Lanka in emergencies," said the Foreign Office.
