Foreign Office warns of violent protests in Brazil
The Foreign Office has updated its travel advice for Brazil following the outbreak of violent protests in a number of cities, including Rio de Janeiro.
There have also been protests – some attracting up to 100,000 demonstrators – in Brasilia, Sao Paulo and Belo Horizonte and many other major cities.
The Foreign Office urged visitors to avoid all protests and demonstrations and to monitor local media.
It said they should expect some disruption to travel and warned those planning to visit the British Consulate to check before travelling as opening hours have been disrupted.
Further demonstrations against the country’s failing public services and the cost to Brazil of staging the World Cup in 2014 are planned for tomorrow.
