Foreign Office updates Turkiye advisory as wildfires force evacuations
The Foreign Office has advised UK holidaymakers in Turkiye to ‘exercise caution and follow orders’ as the country swelters in a scorching heatwave.
Nearly 4,000 residents were evacuated due to wildfires and a number of deaths have occurred.
Temperatures have surpassed 50C with fires impacting several regions.
The worst hit area is around the city of Bursa.
The Foreign Office said: “Wildfires happen frequently in Turkey during summer. You could get a fine or prison sentence for lighting a fire of any kind or discarding cigarettes in risk areas such as woodland.”
“If there is a wildfire in your area, local authorities may tell you to leave your accommodation. Follow the directions of local authorities.”
As well as Bursa, wildfires have hit Mersin, Antalya and Usak regions.
Flights and holidays to Turkiye resorts are still operating as scheduled.
Elsewhere, wildfires have been raging in Greece, Bulgaria and Montenegro.
