Former banker to lead review of airport expansion
A former head of the Confederation of British Industry and former deputy governor of the Bank of England is to lead an independent review into where to increase airport capacity in the southeast of England.
Options being considered by Sir Howard Davies include, amongst others, a third runway at Heathrow or a totally new airport to the East of London.
He will not report back until after the next election, allowing PM David Cameron to keep his pre-election pledge not to expand Heathrow. However, an interim report is expected next year.
Cameron said in the House of Commons that he was seeking a cross-party support to address the problem of a shortage of air capacity in the UK.
