The 19th century apothecary in Ravenna’s National Museum
Local Italian guide associations put on incredible nationwide show for International Tourist Guide Day
When the World Federation of Tourist Guide Associations declared 21 February for International Tourist Guide Day and global activities they could have had no idea how massive the take up would be in Italy.
Tourist guide associations all over the country are getting ready to promote special events to showcase their services.
And, very importantly, these visits are for both visitors and locals alike who can both enjoy the visits and understand a little more about their own heritage.
Tourism treasure chests are being opened and events are being held as far apart as Sicily and Lombardy, Ravenna and Genoa.
This is an opportunity for guide associations o showcase their less-known and less-visited sites, but even they are amazing, highlighting one of Italy’s biggest tourism problems – its massive range of tourism assets – everywhere!
For example, on Lake Como, visitors and locals get to see and understand the design of the lakeside villas on the ‘Alta Lario’ from Renaissance to Baroque – and Como’s 3 R’s – Renaissance, Romanesque and Rationalism.
Naturally, as befits Southern Italy, special "Guide … in Love" itineraries have been organized – inspired by love. Routes throughout the region in Naples, Pompeii, Herculaneum, Capri, Benevento, Paestum and Salerno.
And in Ravenna their special day (23rd February) will be focused on the little-known jewel – The National Museum – with its amazing and very important, world-class, collection of works of locally-collected art and artefacts. The collection ranges from ceramics, through sculpture, through an armoury and even a superbly-reconstructed 18th century apothecary.
The Ravenna museum is now set around the cloisters of a former monastery where are also set Roman tombs and a modern collection of life-like wolf sculptures. But the triumph of the museum is the re-created apse of the Santa Chiara church with simply the most sensational restored 14th century frescoes painted by Pietro da Rimini.
Says the Italian Guide Association: "The purpose of the day is to attract the attention of public authorities, the media and citizens about the importance of a professional tour guide and his work of cultural diffusion and promotion of the territory."
"We believe that offering a free tour benefits the territory, tourists and even the professional who shows how to admire a monument looking through the eyes of knowledge provided by the tour guide is much more satisfying and stimulating and rewarding."
