Frontier expanding fleet with new Airbus order
Low cost carrier Frontier Airlines will buy 12 more Airbus single aisle jets as it looks to update its fleet with larger aircraft boasting more seats.
The $1.3 billion deal is for 10 A321s and two A320s and together with already agreed orders, will increase its fleet by 80% to more than 100 planes within five years.
As it continues a transition to an ultra low cost business model, Frontier is phasing out its older aircraft with newer, high density planes.
The A321 jets will offer 67% more seats than its current A319s.
"Our plans are to be the lowest-cost carrier in the U.S. In order to do that, you have to be as efficient as possible," said CEO Barry Biffle.
"From a cost perspective, the change is massive," Biffle said.
The two A320s will be delivered next year followed by the A321s in 2016 and 2017, Frontier chief financial officer Jimmy Dempsey said.
