Frontier, Volaris to start codesharing
Ultra low cost carriers Frontier Airlines and Volaris are joining hands in a two-way codeshare agreement.
The codeshare pact will enable the two sister airlines to add up to 20 new destinations, according to Volaris CEO Enrique Beltranena.
Codeshare flights will begin in the spring, subject to regulatory approval.
Frontier’s parent company Indigo Partners has a major stake in Mexico’s Volaris.
"Many customers traveling between the US and Mexico are forced to pay high fares to fly, and this agreement will provide lower fares to a vast majority of the US and Mexico population," said Frontier chief executive Barry Biffle.
Volaris already operates 20 US-Mexico routes and Frontier serves Cancun, Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta from the US.
The two airlines describe the agreement as the first ever between to ultra low cost carriers.
"As the leading ultra-low-cost carrier in Mexico, Volaris is an ideal partner with which to align, and we look forward to working together to deliver low fares to millions of people," Biffle added.
Both airlines fly a similar sized all-Airbus A320 family fleet of jets numbering nearly 150 combined, with an additional 300 aircraft on order.
