Furious reaction to FCO update
Nigeria: Politician cites Damilola Taylor as evidence London is dangerous too
Nigeria has reacted furiously to Foreign Office claims that the country is dangerous – by claiming the death of 10-year-old Damilola Taylor proved London is as dangerous as Lagos.
A report in today’s Daily Telegraph says the Nigerian junior foreign minister listed seven Nigerian nationals who have been victim to violent attacks in London – including Damilola, who died after being stabbed in a stairwell of a block of flats in November 2000.
A statement from the Nigerian politician reads: “Chief Onyia condemns in its entirety the attempt by Downing Street to provoke panic in Nigeria and scare potential visitors.”
The Foreign Office updated its advice for Nigeria a couple of weeks ago, stating: “Violent crime is prevalent in Lagos and elsewhere in the south of the country. There is an increased risk of global terrorism in Nigeria. For the full Foreign Office advice visit www.fco.gov.uk/travel.
