Gang who could not shoot straight botches at-sea rescue
Everyone’s heard of suicidal people jumping off ships but a man rescued from the Atlantic Ocean jumped ship on his own after an argument, which started an almost comical “Keystone Cops” series of events.
The man could be heard arguing with someone, witnesses said, before he jumped off the Carnival Sensation near Florida’s Port St. Lucie.
The Sensation’s efforts to rescue the man via a rescue boat failed when sailors apparently forget to untie lines from the larger boat. The rescue boat tipped, filled with water and never joined the search.
Passengers yelled encouragement at the passenger in the water for about 90 minutes, according to wire service reports, A second rescue boat was never launched — for whatever reasons.
Rescuers from another nearby ship, the Disney Wonder, pulled the man from the water, according to US Coast Guard officials.
The man, who was not identified, was taken to a hospital for observation.
