Gangland-style shootings harming bucolic Bermuda image
Drive-by shootings are not the image most visitors have of Bermuda, a British mid-island that has long been a picturesque play ground for vacationing Americans.
But a Reuters story detailing such violent incidents as an 18-year-old resident dying in a hail of bullets, the fifth shooting in three months, has put the spotlight on crime on the island.
In the past, crime and other problems generally were not reported outside of Bermuda. But new stories are attracting wider media attention, as well as growing concern among tourism officials.
“Our visitors do not come to Bermuda to find this and they will stop coming if it continues,” Tourism Minister Ewart Brown told Reuters.
He emphasized, however, that such incidents were still in the minority.
“It’s a huge relative change from the way we were but compared to other countries and domiciles we’re still at the top of the scale for safety. It’s cause for concern but nothing more than that,” he said.
