Gatwick evacuated after fire alarm
Although the Gatwick Airport strikes planned to start today were recently called off, it hasn’t saved holidaymakers from flight disruption.
An airport evacuation was carried out at Gatwick’s North Terminal this morning after fire alarms went off.
The departure lounge was cleared for just a short time but it has led to long queues.
Many frustrated travelers took to social media to vent.
Images showed hundreds of people waiting patiently outside the terminal.
Firefighters were called and soon deemed it safe to return.
Passengers were slowly allowed back inside the airport at around 8am.
“As always, safety and security are our number one priority. We apologise to passengers for any inconvenience,” the airport tweeted.
Many travelers complained of ‘chaos’ and lack of instructions from staff.
It wasn’t the only drama at Gatwick this morning.
An easyJet flight was forced to make an emergency landing back at the airport, just minutes after takeoff.
The flight, heading to Dubrovnik, before being escorted off the runway by emergency vehicles.
It is thought the plane suffered a hydraulic problem, possibly with the landing gear.
It landed safely without incident.
