Gavin Smith resigns from Carnival

A report in Cruise Weekly says that Gavin Smith, Carnival Australia’s head of Sales and Marketing has resigned, leaving the company on Friday.

A spokesperson told CW that his departure was “by mutual agreement”, saying that Smith has made an extremely valuable contribution to the growth of P&O in Australia and NZ and the company wishes him well.

It’s not yet known if he will be replaced, or whether his departure will spark further reorganisation within Carnival Australia.

Smith, who’s been some 18 years with P&O, was md of Carnival Australia till a top-level shuffle in late February this year.

At that time, Peter Ratcliffe, the LA-based ceo of P&O Pacific Princess, which is responsible for P&O Cruises Australia, visited Sydney to issue a formal apologyfor the Diane Brimble debacle and announce that a new md would be appointed to head the Carnival operation here.

Smith was given responsibility for sales and marketing, reporting to Dean Brown, a Princess exec from LA who was named interim md in Australia during the search for a permanent appointment.

From 09 July, Smith would have been reporting to the new md, Ann Sherry, who’s moving to Carnival from the banking industry.
