Gay group tour cancelled after protests
Tanzania: Campaigners win the day as month-long visit is postponed
Politically-correct travellers may want to consider whether Tanzania is a suitable destination for them after mass demonstrations met plans for a visit by a gay tour group.
Some 100 gay tourists from the United States were due to visit the country later this year for a one-month tour; however the tour has been put off following a march by hundreds of protestors at the weekend.
According to the Tanzanian newspaper The Guardian, one Muslim cleric who addressed the rally, which ended with demonstrators burning US flags, urged people to “join hands in condemning this obnoxious habit from entering the country”. Other religious leaders have stated that the visit would “damage the reputation of the country”.
And while the Tanzanian government has previously stated that is has no objection to the visit of the tour group, its organisers have decided that the trip should be postponed until next year.
