Germany set to back down on plans to quarantine Brits

Wednesday, 02 Jul, 2021 0

Germany is expected to relent in its demand that travellers from the UK quarantine when travelling to Europe.

The German Chancellor Angela Merkel is set to meet with PM Boris Johnson today and travel restrictions are expected to be a main focus of the talks.

The Times reports that Merkel will back down and allow fully vaccinated people to travel to the EU without quarantine.

Germany currently mandates a two-week quarantine period for anyone coming from the UK, which it describes as a ‘virus variant region.’

The Chancellor had been trying to garner support from member states to impose quarantine.

It comes as the UK government nears a decision on allowing fully-vaccinated Britons to travel to amber list countries without having to quarantine when they return.

It is expected to be approved before the end of this month.

"The UK and Germany have a steadfast friendship and a shared outlook on many issues," the PM said.

It will be Merkel’s last official visit to the UK before she stands down later this year.
