Get tough with airlines, watchdog urges

Holiday watchdogs have urged authorities to clamp down on airlines who refuse to compensate customers for delayed or cancelled flights.

Holiday Which? said some carriers are attempting to find legal loopholes in the new EU-led Regulation on Denied Boarding and refusing to pay out.

Under the law, which came into force earlier this year, passengers are entitled to food, drink and free phone calls if problems occur with flights.

Holiday Which? named Ryanair, Jet2.com and Thomsonfly among the culprits, adding that the Civil Aviation Authority was investigating the Irish carrier following complaints from customers.

It said authorities need to clamp down to ensure the laws were being followed.

“We’re glad passengers flying in the EU have more rights but it’s too early to judge how successful the law in practice will be,” said Bob Tolliday from Holiday Which? “It [the law] can only really work if airlines comply which is why it’s so important that they don’t get away with ducking their responsibilities.

“We’d like Ryanair to set a good example by publicly committing to honouring the terms of the regulation. It if continues to flout the law, the Irish regulator should get tough.”
