GETTING KIDS BACK TO NATURE

At a point when the news agenda keeps returning to the social, educational and health implication of raising generations of children who are isolated and insulated from the natural world, Mark Hillsdon looks at some of the responses to this growing crisis.

Currently debate is raging following the temporary closure of several petting farms, but at the same time educationalists, psychologists and other professionals are deeply concerned that a further wedge will be driven between children and the hands-on experience of the natural world

Mark Hillsdon overviews travel and tourism as a key sector well positioned to make a difference in terms of policy and practice – one in which some organisations, destinations and individuals are leading by example. Ranging from Natural England and the National Trust to Woodland Schools and Farms, he singles out key places which are thinking outside the box to re-engage young people with nature and he looks at ways in which their examples can be implemented in other contexts. This is an incredibly timely and thoughtful piece which is also in-step with thinking throughout the industrialised world as has been shown by the recent attention on the thinking of people like Richard Louv (Last Child in the Woods). As a topic it has implications for parents, practitioners, politicians and society as a whole and will remain a major subject for debate for a very long time.
