Gettysburg: gambling on a casino?
Gettysburg, Pa, is the site of another battle.
Instead of a Civil War conflict, this one pits a group that wants to build the state’s first slot-machine casinos against preservationists.
The Crossroads Gaming Resort and Spa would include a luxury hotel, casino and several restaurants only a mile from the Gettysburg National Military Park.
“The proposal has divided the town — if not quite like the Civil War, then at least enough to pit neighbor against neighbor at public hearings,” wrote USA Today.
Casino supporters claim the move will help the local economy by boosting visitors. Opponents worry about the city’s tarnished image.
Gettysburg is the US’s most visited and best-known battlefield.
Preservation groups have named it “endangered” because of the possible casino. But casino backers say their project will not harm the historic site.
