God’s Waiting Room goes after young blood
An English seaside resort is hoping to update its image to attract more young visitors – with the introduction of “double deck chairs”.
The town of Eastbourne, East Sussex – often referred to as God’s Waiting Room because of its ageing population and perception as a retirement resort – is said to be introducing the chairs “for amorous couples for whom two chairs are just too far apart”.
The Daily Telegraph quotes a council spokesman as saying: “We brought them in to bring a bit more romance to the town. We do have the image of a retirement resort, and that’s a bit unfair. So we are going to try this to challenge some outdated perceptions.”
The newspaper helpfully points out that the “wide-boy” chairs, which will allow couples “a romantic cuddle as the sun goes down”, will also represent a 90p saving on the price of hiring two traditional chairs.
