Golden Week saw a record 710 million trips by Chinese travellers
China’s Golden Week holiday period again saw another record exodus for domestic and overseas travel.
Preliminary data from the China National Tourism Administration says there were 710 million trips during the holiday.
This year Golden Week was lengthened by an eighth day from October 1 to October 8 due to the the Mid-Autumn Festival crossover.
It is up 12% in real terms compared to a year ago.
It also set a new record for rail travel with 110 million passengers travelling by train, while 12.95 million passenger trips were made by plane.
Total tourism related spending for the period is estimated at US$88 billion.
While the large bulk of travellers took domestic trips, overseas travel was up by more than 50%.
The estimated six million plus travellers who ventured overseas visited 1,155 cities in 88 countries or regions, Xinhua reports.
