Good Food Good Vibes in Crete Meet a medicine man in Amazonia
Crete’s Culinary Sanctuaries offers cultural-culinary immersion seminars (eco-agritourism) for small groups. Participants discover a taste of Crete’s wild nature, culture and cuisine during botanic hikes in majestic mountains, visits to historic sites, organic farms and remote villages. Journeys change with the seasons and include healthy cooking classes, organic olive oil production, beekeeping, winemaking, cheese making and enjoying fresh and local cuisine. Our all-local network of chefs, sustainable organic farmers, botanists, mountaineers, historians, et al., work together to share the wonders of Crete with visitors from around the world.
CCS is internationally acclaimed for best practices in sustainable travel. Their aim is to promote and protect Crete’s cultural heritage and natural beauty by directly supporting residents actively working toward that goal. Visitors have a rare opportunity to experience Crete from a local view while supporting important preservation programs.
CCS offers eco-agritourism workshops for colleagues and was selected as a concrete case in sustainable tourism by the World Tourism Forum for Peace and Sustainable Development, The World Travel and Tourism Council, and is a benchmark for research (GW University, Transitions Abroad).
Hike deep into primary and secondary rainforest accompanied by naturalist guides. Receive a traditional cleansing from a local medicine man and test your skills at the indigenous arts of blowguns and spears used for hunting. Learn about ceramic pottery-making from a local woman and weave your own basket from locally-collected fibres. Search for nocturnal species on a night walk through the jungle.. Observe a local family panning for gold.
These are all activities offered by Yachana Lodge who believe that “Ecotourism is of vital importance for the conservation of the Amazon Tropical Rainforest. To meet this goal, The Yachana Foundation built Yachana Lodge on more than 405 hectares near the tiny community of Mondaña.
The humid tropical forest is hot and humid. Its average temperature is of 80°F or 27°C. Yachana Lodge provides a window into the reality of the life and culture in the Ecuadorian Amazon, comfortable lodging, employment to local people, training to students and local residents in hotel administration, restaurant and environmental interpretation, incentives to create a conscience of the importance of true ecotourism
