Government ‘delays decision on third Heathrow runway’
Business leaders have warned the Government that its decision on whether to build a third runway at Heathrow can’t wait any longer amid speculation that Prime Minister David Cameron isn’t likely to deliver his verdict this week.
A City-based newspaper claimed it had been told by a senior transport source that the decision will not be announced until next week at the earliest.
It quoted the Confederation of British Industry saying ‘the decision simply cannot wait any longer’,
The CBI claims Britain will lose £5.3 billion a year in lost trade to emerging economies including Brazil, Russia, India and China unless it has a new runway by 2030.
The Airports Commission led by Sir Howard Davies recommended Heathrow as the best airport for an addition in July this year and, at the time, the Government said it would take a final decision by the end of this year.
