Government may take ‘island approach’ in selecting green list destinations
Transport secretary Grant Shapps said popular sunshine islands could make the cut on the green list even if the mainland remains at amber.
Shapps told the BBC islands in the Med, Aegean and elsewhere popular with holidaymakers could make the green list, such as the Canaries, Balearic and Greek islands.
"It’s desirable where an aircraft can fly direct to an island and that island is therefore accessible in that you don’t need to go via the mainland, that you look at that differently. That’s what we did last year as well," Shapps said.
However, Shapps said no decisions on including any new green list destinations had been made yet.
"The government will take an island approach for border measures where possible," aviation minister Robert Courts told MPs.
The Canaries, Balearics and some Greek islands, among others, have recorded data that could potentially put in on the green list.
The government is scheduled to announce any new updates to the traffic light system on 7 June.
