Government opens access to UK regional airports
Foreign airlines are to be allowed greater access to UK regional airports.
The government is to further liberalise regional air services by encouraging overseas carriers to fly new international services to or from airports outside the South East.
The Department for Transport is to waive ‘fifth freedom’ restrictions within bilaetral air service agreements allowing foreign carriers to either:
*Set down or pick up passengers at a UK regional airport en route between two other countries,
Or
*Fly from one country and pick up or set down passengers at a third country en route to a UK regional destination.
Aviation minister Karen Buck said the announcement supported UK policy to promote the growth of regional airports.
She said: “It is also consistent with the UK’s general appproach towards liberalising its bilateral air service agreements.
“The move will potentially mean more services and a greater choice of connections for passengers outside the South East of England. It will attract extra business to regional airports, improve access to markets, and help enhance the growing contribution that airports throughout the UK are making to their local and regional economies.
“It is now up the the airlines to apply to operate new services.”
