Greek island shaken by earthquake
Western Greek island of Lefkada shaken by earthquake.
The AP news agency said the quake was centred just off the Ionian Sea island of Lefkada, about 175 miles north-west of Athens. It was reported to measure 6.4 on the Richter scale.
About 10 people were initially said to be injured, although officials added they were waiting for reports from villages before the full impact on people and buildings could be assessed.
Only this week people in Greece have been holding memorial services to mark the 50th anniversary of the quakes that killed nearly 500 people on Cephalonia.
One Lefkada resident told AP that some people were asleep when the tremor struck.
“It was very strong. Some things, like the television, fell down,” he said. “It mostly scared tourists, who have not felt such intense things. We have lived through many earthquakes.”
