Green assault on no-frills carriers
Environmentalists in Germany are lobbying the EU in an effort to have budget flights banned.
The Daily Express reports that Green and social democrat campaigners want to see an end to “no-frills” carriers across the whole continent on the grounds that such flights are destroying the planet’s environment.
The newspaper reports that Germany’s environmental brigade are branding air traffic as “Climate killer number one” and have this week launched a campaign to discourage people when flying when there are other forms of transport available.
Green Euro MP Heide Ruehle is quoted as saying: “These cheap airlines must be stopped,” adding that governments should introduce higher EU taxes on aviation fuel, higher landing and take-off fees, and a minimum ticket price.
A spokesman for easyJet told the newspaper: “I have never heard anything so ridiculous. To suggest that we are destroying the planet is laughable.”
