Green Globe launches global ecotourism standard
At the Cairns Ecotourism Conference in Australia ealier this month, Green Globe 21 delivered a ‘global standard for ecotourism’.
The Standard is a collaborative work by the Ecotourism Association of Australia and CRC Sustainable Tourism – Green Globe’s research partner.
The Standard is based on the Australian Nature and Ecotourism Accreditation [Certification] Program (NEAP) Standard combined with elements of the very latest Green Globe ABC system for sustainable tourism. Both the Standard and the Green Globe Certification Program incorporate the fundamental principles for sound ecotourism certification identified in the Mohonk Agreement.
The Standard has been developed in consultation with select tourism/ecotourism certification experts and has been piloted with a number of ecotourism operations from a wide range of countries and products. The supporting systems that underpin the working Standard and Certification Programme including training courses, assessment and operating manuals will be in place in early 2003.
Commenting on the launch, Green Globe 21’s Chairman Geoffrey Lipman said: “The International Ecotourism Standard reflects our longstanding commitment to Agenda 21 for Travel and Tourism, the process oriented ISO system and the unique Green Globe performance oriented Awareness, Benchmarking and Certification system.
“Criteria are included in the program to ensure applicability in an international setting – most specifically the WTO Global Code of Ethics and the ecological, community, cultural and social factors so central to Sustainable and Responsible Tourism.”
