Wednesday, 07 May, 2021 0

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps announced the Government’s travel green list, confirming 12 countries and territories are deemed safe to travel to from 17 May.

As expected this includes Portugal, including Madeira and the Azores, Gibraltar and Israel but it doesn’t include holiday favourites Spain, Greece and France.

Other green countries and territories include Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Brunei, Iceland, Faroe Islands, and the Falkland Islands.

Shapps said the list will be reviewed every three weeks.

He said this is just ‘the first step’ with a very careful and cautious approach. "We have to turn the key slowly."

He advised the public not to book travel without clearly defined refund protection if the Covid situation changes and as destinations move from one tier to another

Shapps also warned of expected delays to passenger processing at airport border points, although more manpower will be deployed.

People should not consider travelling to any ‘amber’ and ‘red’ countries for holidays.

The Maldives and Nepal were added to the ‘red’ list, as was Turkey.

Instanbul is due to host the Champions League Final later this month between Manchester City and Chelsea, whith several  thousand fans permitted at the game.

Shapps said that as a red list destination, fans should not attend.

The govrenment is open to hosting it in England but it is ultimately a decision for UEFA,.
