Greening ousted as Heathrow debate hots up
Justine Greening has been ousted from the role of transport minister, as widely predicted, signalling that the government is at least prepared to re-consider expanding Heathrow after the next election.
The MP for Putney, whose west London constituency is under the Heathrow flight path, is an avid opponent of a third runway at the airport and mayor Boris Johnson said her opposition to its expansion could be the only reason she’d been moved.
Greening has been replaced as transport minister by Patrick McLoughlin, former chief whip.
As part of the Cabinet reshuffle, Greening has been given the role of International Development Secretary, replacing Andrew Mitchell. She was described by the BBC as looking "unhappy" as she left Number 10 following a meeting with David Cameron yesterday.
McLoughlin has been an MP since 1986, currently for the Derbyshire Dales constituency.
Aviation minister Theresa Villiers, who had been working towards bringing airlines into the ATOL system, has also switched jobs, becoming Northern Ireland secretary. She has been replaced by Chelmsford MP Simon Burns.
Former culture media and sport secretary Jeremy Hunt was promoted to health secretary in the recent reshuffle. Maria Miller will take over his role.
David Curtis-Brignell FTS, chairman of the Tourism Society, said: "Tourism has been recognised by the Government as one of the key industries to help get the British economy moving again, and I hope that Maria Miller will build on the extensive groundwork done by Jeremy Hunt over the last two years."
