Groom in police custody accused of South Africa murder

The husband of a woman who was murdered on their honeymoon in South Africa has been remanded in custody after South African authorities appealed against a British court’s decision to grant him bail.

Shrien Dewani, a businessman from Bristol, is suspected of conspiring to murder Anni Dewani who he claimed was killed by carjackers on the outskirts of Cape Town. He denies any involvement in the murder.

City of Westminster magistrates granted bail to Dewani, 31, from Bristol, for £250,000 but he must now remain in custody pending a High Court hearing.

The hearing, to be held in the next 48 hours, will decide whether he can be released on bail.

His 28-year-old wife from Sweden was shot after a taxi the couple was travelling in was hijacked.

The South African authorities want to question Dewani after the taxi driver Zola Tongo told Western Cape High Court that he was offered 15,000 rand (£1,400) by Dewani to kill Anni.

Dewani told City of Westminster Magistrates Court he did not consent to extradition, though Anni’s family told the BBC that he should go to South Africa to answer questions.

"We just want to see justice being done, all the evidence being listened to and a fair trial – justice for Anni is all we are looking for," they said.
