Gunman killed during shoot-out near Empire State Building
Several people have been wounded in a shoot-out near the Empire State Building, one of New York’s most popular tourist attractions.
US media said a gunman was killed by police and up to nine others were injured in the incident which took place before 0900 (1300 GMT) on Fifth Avenue and 34th Street.
An eye witness told US TV station Fox 5 News that the gunman had been shooting indiscriminately at people and that one young woman standing beside her fell after being shot.
One report suggested two men had started arguing in the street and one suddenly pulled a gun and started shooting randomly. New York police shot the gunman, but some reports said a second person had been killed.
There is currently a heavy police presence around the Empire State Building, a 442-metre skyscraper which attracts nearly 4m visitors a year.
