Hacker makes contact with Qantas

Monday, 07 Jul, 2025 0

Qantas says an individual has contacted the airline regarding the recent cyberattack.

The alleged cyber criminal has opened a dialogue with the airline while Qantas ‘currently works to validate this.’

The Australian Federal Police is involved but Qantas won’t confirm if a ransom demand has been made.

The airline acknowledged the cyberattack  last week, which has potentially exposed the data of up to six million customers.

It says there is no evidence any financial data has been comprised.

“As this is a criminal matter, we have engaged the AFP and won’t be commenting any further on the detail of the contact,” the airline said.

“There is no evidence that any personal data stolen from Qantas has been released but, with the support of specialist cyber security experts, we continue to actively monitor.”

The AFP confirmed it was investigating.

“The airline has been highly engaged in assisting authorities and the AFP with investigating this incident.”

The hack targeted a third party which holds data from the Qantas call centre.

Qantas acknowledged the amount of data exposed was ‘significant.’
