Asian carrier Hainan Airlines is upping frequencies on its Boston-Beijing route, primarily to accommodate Chinese students heading home for the holidays.

"We noticed demand was very strong around the holidays, and we found planes to offer extra trips," said Joel Chusid, US executive director at Hainan.

"There are a lot of students traveling, as well as people visiting friends and relatives over the holidays."

According to 2013 public records, more than 13,000 students from China studied at universities in Massachusetts.

During the pre-Christmas to New Year period Hainan will increase services from four times a week to daily flights from December 15-24, including twice daily between December 18-20.

Hainan said it will also have daily services from January 1-10 in the New Year.

"It’s a great signal about the demand for travel to China not only from the business community, but student communities that are very strong in the Boston market," said Thomas Glynn, chief executive of the Massachusetts Port Authority which manages airport operations.
